Recently, I was speaking with a group of friends and they asked why the media keeps touting the power of antioxidants.  Should we take antioxidants? 

最近,我與一群朋友聊天,他們問為什麼媒體仍持續鼓吹抗氧化物的能力?我們應該採用抗氧化物來保健嗎?

 

First, I offered a little antioxidant 101.  Antioxidants “neutralize” free radicals (unstable, chemically reactive molecules). Free radical production is a byproduct of the body’s biological processes and are also used by our immune cells as little “bomblets” to kill pathogens. However, the body needs a balance of free-radicals, enough to do the job, but not enough to cause problems.

首先,我要提供一點抗氧化物的指標性觀念给大家。抗氧化物能「中和」自由基(自由基是不穩定的化學反應分子) 。產生自由基是身體生物過程的副產品,也是被我們的免疫細胞利用作為小小的炸彈以殺害病原體。但是,身體需要平衡的自由基數量,足夠讓免疫細胞做工作就好,太多就會造成問題。
